Tetra butyl ammonium bicarbonate solution is a water-soluble salt that appears as a colourless to yellowish solution that may have a slight ammoniacal odour. It is often used as a base in organic synthesis reactions, where it acts as a buffering agent and provides a source of bicarbonate ion. It is less likely to react with biological molecules than other commonly used buffers, such as phosphate buffer. It is a quaternary ammonium compound that is commonly used as a phase-transfer catalyst in organic synthesis reactions. It is stable at room temperature and has a relatively long shelf life.
