N-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-benzyl ammonium chloride is a white to off-white powder with a molecular weight that depends on the specific alkyl chain length and can range from around 300 to 500 g/mol. This quaternary ammonium compound is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. It is a common ingredient in disinfectant and sanitizing products, including household cleaners, industrial disinfectants, and hand sanitizers. It is also used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent in personal care and cosmetic products. The synthesis of this chemical compound is done by the reaction of benzyl chloride with N-alkyl-N,N-dimethylamine in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide, followed by quaternization with methyl chloride.
